Are soulmates even real?

We have been bombarded with the idea that a soulmate exists ever since we were growing up. Be it through rom-coms, love songs, books or tv shows, we’ve been taught to look for that ‘one true love’ out there destined for us all. The reality is that believing in soulmates can actually blind you from potential prospects, simply because they don’t check all the boxes you’ve envisioned your perfect partner to have.

The term ‘soulmate’ dates back to Greek Mythology, where humans were born in pairs, bound in one body, with the same soul. Zeus split them in two for offending the gods, after which, the humans wandered the earth in search of their long lost other half. Now let’s snap back to reality. In a world full of 7.8 billion people (and counting), finding your ‘soulmate’ seems almost impossible.

Sure the idea of it sounds great, but the truth of the matter is that everyone will have a different experience. Some people will meet the ‘love of their life’ straight off the bat. Others might fall in love with multiple people throughout the years. It’s important to let go of the pressure surrounding finding ‘the one’ and instead focus on finding someone along the way that simply brings happiness to your life.
